Schalk van der Merwe is a South African artist of growing renown.
Born and bred in Cape Town, he now lives and works in Hout Bay.
Having gained formative experience in the advertising industry as both
Graphic Designer and Art Director, the latter role earning him
international recognition, this eclectic background has helped inform his
artistic practice. An artist who predominantly chooses to focus on
portraiture, the nuanced depictions of his subjects are rendered with a
sensitivity and fragility which belies the rawness of the artist’s emotion
and expression.
Schalk has exhibited successfully for a number of years in galleries
across South Africa. An artist who is now synonymous with these
beguiling and ambivalent portraits, he is now receiving wider
international recognition and acclaim as evidenced by the current demand
from a worldwide collector base for his unique works. Whilst he already
has a significant following in North America, his work is also represented
in noteworthy collections across Africa and, increasingly, within Europe.
